Westchester County Suspends Releasing Local COVID-19 Numbers, 64 Dead in Westchester as of Wednesday, April 1, 2020

At his daily COVID-19 briefing this afternoon, county boss and Rye guy George Latimer said the county would suspend releasing local city and town COVID-19 case numbers. At the end of his briefing he said “(we) will try to correct these problems with reporting numbers”. The county has continually warned the figures come from the state on a delayed basis.
Local numbers have only been provided since last Wednesday, March 25th when Rye was reported to have 15 COVID-19 cases. Yesterday, that number for Rye was 36. An accurate local accounting is particularly important for first responders – addresses of known COVID-19 cases are provided to police, fire and ambulance so they can take extra precautions.
Numbers are reported down from the State, and it’s not clear when (or if) local numbers will be provided in the coming days.
Here are the county-wide numbers. County communications director Catherine Cioffi provided the clarification that “The number of deaths identified increased from 25 to 64 overnight; this is not the number that died in this 24 hr period. There is a lag in reporting and that these deaths occurred over the past few weeks.”
