Have you always wanted to compost but never knew exactly how it worked or thought you have space for it? Are you afraid composting will smell and attract rodents? Then expand your recycling efforts to include kitchen scraps and yard debris by attending this special presentation – “COMPOSTING IS COOL!” – and turn your yard waste and food scraps into a valuable resource for your garden.

Meet your "dirt teacher": Anne Mottola, Instructor and Curriculum Developer for Garden Based Education

Anne Mottola and HannahBorn and raised on Long Island, Anne Mottola moved to Westchester in 2006. She began gardening as a child, alongside her father who grew up on a LI potato farm. Once Anne planted her own garden at her first home in Port Jefferon, NY, her father pitched in. She continues to garden (and compost) today on a tenth of an acre at her home here in Rye.

Anne graduated with a BA in Sociology/Psychology from the University of Virginia and a Masters Degree in Social Work from Fordham's School of Social Welfare in NYC. She worked in child centered agencies for over 12 years. More recently, she has worked for over 10 years in elementary schools on Long Island and in Westchester. She currently wears many hats: she works part time for the NY Botanical Garden as an Instructor at the Family Garden and part time as an Instructor/Consultant for Kaleidoscope Garden Design, LLC. She also serves as an Instructor at Osborn School (where she started and has sustained their school garden for the past five years), teaching garden-based lessons and running a newspaper club. Anne is a freelance graphic designer, a tutor to elementary age children and a very proud mom to a 16 year old daughter. In 2014, Anne completed a Gardening Certificate program at the New York Botanical Garden.
