VIDEO: Black Lives Matter Speech by Westchester Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins
About 1,000 of your neighbors participated in a Black Lives Matter protest and march on Saturday, June 13th.
The peaceful group gathered at Rye High School at 2pm and then marched to the village green for speeches from local officials and activists. The group then resumed its march, winding around Rye before ending back at the high school.
Here is the speech of Westchester Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins. Jenkins spoke about how his father was a New York City police officer. “I know that the police officers that have the good in their heart which is 99% of those officers, we need to give them the support that is necessary to get rid of the bad officers and make sure that black lives matter and everybody has the feeling that they’re getting the accountability that is necessary.”
Jenkins about growing up in the Bronx and Mt. Vernon before moving to Yonkers after getting married. He recounted when he ran the NAACP in Yonkers and told a fellow Fordam Prep alum “You will never know what it is like to walk into a store and have somebody follow you around just because you are black. You will never understand what that means.” He spoke about how people need to become anti-racist.
