Rye PD welcomed two new officers to the City of Rye in a brief, socially distanced ceremony Monday morning in the council chambers at Rye City Hall.
City staff, officers and the families looked on as Rye City Clerk Carolyn D’Andrea, Esq. conducted the swearing-in for Rye Police Officer Matthew Alto and Rye Police Officer Nicholas “Nikko” DiDomizio. Rye Public Safety Commissioner Robert Falk presided over the ceremony and welcomed the officers to Rye.
The new officers will conduct six to eight weeks of field training before being assigned regular patrol, Commissioner Falk told MyRye.com. The city was fortunate to be able to recruit officers with prior experience and hence avoiding the requirement any new officers complete academy training. Falk gave Lieutenant Mike Anfuso “100% credit” for his role in the recruiting process. When you have brand new recruits, it can take a year and a half of academy and field training before an officer can be properly deployed, Falk said.
The two new officers bring department headcount up to 37. The two positions have been vacant since at least January, and the department also is down four active officers for various reasons.
