In Memory: Mary Roussos, Age 88
Mary Roussos, 88 of Avon, Connecticut, formerly of Niantic, passed away peacefully at the Countryside Manor, January 2, 2021. Born July 7, 1932, Mary was the youngest and last surviving child of Edward and Gertrude (Wessels) Roussos. Preceded in death by her beloved parents, sisters Carol and Harriet (Roussos) Polce and her brother Allen. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, children of Harriet and Allen.
Mary grew up in New Britain and Hartford. She attended Rensselaer College graduating with an education degree. She began her career in Rye, New York. Later moving to Montville High School as the women’s Physical Education teacher and field hockey coach. She genuinely cared for her students and was influential in their academic and sporting success. She greatly enjoyed spending her summers traveling the US with her brother and fellow teacher Allen. After retiring from teaching, she became a respiratory therapist in the New London hospital system.
Mary loved the outdoors, fishing, canoeing and sailing. She enjoyed good food and wine and refined her appreciation by studying both. She loved spending time with friends and family and traveling near and far. Mary and her colleague and friend Amy Mook, travelled the US and internationally seeing England, Germany, Italy, and China. As a sister, aunt and great aunt, family was always important to her. She remained in touch with them throughout her life, always happy to hear family news. She especially enjoyed holiday get-togethers. She was a caring sister for her older siblings, especially Carol for whom she assisted with elder care and support. She was a real friend and confidant who would listen well and offer sage advice as she saw fit.
Funeral services to be held Monday, (1/18) beginning with visitation from 9-10 a.m. in the Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main St., West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Due to Covid-19 space is limited. Social distancing and masks will be required. Funeral services will be streamed at this link. Burial will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Rocky Hill. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.
