Next Heard in Rye Lecture 3/6: “Deep Secrets: Boys’ Friendships and the Crisis of Connection”
"Deep Secrets: Boys' Friendships and the Crisis of Connection" will be the topic presented by Heard in Rye's March speaker Niobe Way.
Dr. Way will discuss boys' friendships and how they change between early and later adolescence, unfortunately leaving many males feeling isolated and disconnected. With friendships and relationships playing a part in health and longevity, it is important to be aware of this occurrance and how it can be avoided.
Drawing on research and interviews conducted with males throughout their adolescence, Dr. Way will focus on the "crisis of connection" that boys are experiencing as today's culture discourages them from intimate friendships and vulnerable emotions. Boys have been found to share their deepest secrets and feelings with their closest male friends, yet as they become men and feel the expectation to become stoic and independent, they lose these relationships. Dr. Way will describe her argument that the solution lies with exposing the inaccuracies of our gender stereotypes and fostering these critical relationships and fundamental human skills.
Niobe Way is a professor of Applied Psychology at New York University and the Past President of the Society for Research on Adolescence. She is also author of the book, Deep Secrets, which she will sign and sell at the lecture.
