On Sunday, 586 Halloween Windows in Rye
It's been going on for 61 years.
One of the finest traditions in Rye is this Sunday.
Five hundred and eight six teams of two students between grade K and 8, will create 586 Halloween windows throughout town this Sunday, October 20th (with a rain date of October 27).
Run by Rye Recreation and sponsored by Rye merchants and the Women's Club of Rye, Recreation Superintendent Sally Rogol reports "We paint through out the downtown and have expanded the event to include store such as Pet Pantry, Go Figure and the UPS Store this year. We also paint by Playland Market, Dock Deli area, Corner Stone and Piazza Pizzeria as well as Citi Bank to Post Road Market. Store owners donate their window space and paintings are done right on the glass store fronts. After the event, through support of funds from the Woman's Club and donations from store owners, we have a window washer clean the store fronts just after Halloween. Without the merchant support, this event would not be possible."
Other activities and events during the day include: 2 Bands – the Arcadia Jazz Trio (Pat Corcoran – local merchant) and The Dragon Coasters (local rye band), ghost building, a magician/blue artist, face painting and a jumping castle. Purchase street will be closed from the Square House to Purdy Avenue from 8 am – 3 pm that day. All children will receive a commemorative medal for their participation in the window painting.
