House Fire @ 95 Grapal Street

The Rye Fire Department responded to an alarm at 95 Grapal Street 9:27pm Wednesday night. “The first arriving units encountered heavy smoke and visible fire and immediately called a 10-75 which is a working structure fire code, which also activates the mutual aid system,” said Rye FD Captain John McDwyer.

The FD first stretched two lines – one into the home at 95 Grapal and the second outside to protect an adjacent home. As more units arrived, and it was confirmed the occupants were all safely out of the home, lines were added into the home to fight the fire in the second floor and attic.

“When you’re going through suppression it tends to look worse, because you’re pushing all that heat fire out the windows,” continued McDwyer. “So it’s kind of spectacular looking [with all the flames], and then it darkens down but but if you look at the structure, you can see that they had they [the fire fighters] made a really good stop and not a whole lot of damage proportionate to the amount of fire.”

Mutual aid for the fire was provided by Rye Brook, Port Chester, Purchase and the Town of Mamaroneck. The Villages Mamaroneck and Harrison covered the Rye firehouses while Rye FD was engaged on the 95 Grapal fire. McDwyer was very pleased with the excellent cooperation from the neighboring communities and that everyone – occupants and firefighters – were safe and injury-free. According to Rye FD, there was no suspicious activity and the fire seemed to be accidental.
