Boys Varsity Soccer Bites the Gorton Wolves
Rye Boys Varsity Soccer bit the Gorton Wolves on Tuesday at Nugent Stadium for a 5 – 0 win.
“Today was a great first step back after gaining a lot of momentum during the preseason and especially on our Syracuse trip,” said Rye Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Jared Small. “We had an opportunity to work on certain facets of our game, particularly trying to be patient in possession and organized in defending in our mid-block.”
The Garnets scored early and often, with Tommy Broderick (#9 in photo, see below) heading home a Kieran Traynor (#10 in photo) cross from the right flank in the 8th minute. Kaden Zion (#12 in photo) notched his first career goal in the 10th minute and mere seconds later Broderick added his 26th career goal–both from Traynor passes. Liam Harrington also opened his account with an emphatic finish from close range after Zion slotted a pass to him in the 19th minute.
The Garnets enjoyed long spells of possession and received contributions from 25 players. The goal of the night came in the 58th minute when Alex Rojas beat a defender on the right wing and served an inviting cross into the box. Mauro Flores (#14 in photo) timed his jump perfectly and emphatically headed his first career goal into the top of the net.
Tilman Oberbannscheidt (#4 in photo) celebrated his birthday with a strong performance on the backline, Fin Kearney and Alex Lee each put in strong shifts in their varsity debuts, and Max Crothall (#50 in photo) and Martin Fields (#32 in photo) combined on the clean sheet.
The team is now 2 – 0 for the season. Watch the replay. Varsity travels to Harrison Wednesday for a 6pm game (watch it).
