Girls Varsity Soccer Stalks the Panthers of Walter Panas, Heads to Quarter Finals
Rye Girls Varsity Soccer stalked the Panthers of Walter Panas on a rainy Saturday at Nugent, advancing to the quarter finals after a 4 – 0 win at Nugent Stadium.
“With the wet conditions and slippery turf, the ball was moving quickly and skidding off players,” said Rye Girls Varsity Soccer Coach Rich Savage.
It took some time before Rye could settle the ball down and open up Walter Panas’s compact defensive style of play. Rye would opening up the scoring off a corner kick where Lyla Keenan served the ball far post to Claire Nemsick who craftily headed the ball back to Mali White who one timed it into the back of the net for the one nothing lead. Within eight minutes Rye would score off another short corner player where Maddy Walsh gracefully tucked the ball over to Lyla Keenan who finished with a Kier corner banger.
The start of the second half, Rye was much more composed. Maddy Walsh played a supporting pass to Parker Calhoun who finished with a beautiful 25 yard shot upper corner. Meredith Kenny would get the final goal for Rye off a pass from Lucy Wykoff. Claire Nemsick, Sage Ruttenberg and Sienna Wardle had solid games for the Garnets.
The team is now 15 – 2. Watch today’s replay. The team is looking forward to hosting John Jay Cross River for the quarter finals on Tuesday at 5:30pm.
