On Tuesday, June 25, the Rye Middle School 8th grade class officially moved up and became high schoolers. As they were handed their diplomas, and stepped into the shoes of 9th graders, they became the incoming Class of 2028.

To start a lovely ceremony, families, friends, administrators, and teachers entered, and the student-led orchestra greeted everyone with professional music. The ceremony officially began with the Pledge of Allegiance, read by Assistant Principal Jennifer Johnson. At the same time, it was interpreted by RMS ASL students Emma Greco, Elizabeth Goldman, Tala Morad, Nicholas Pellegrini, Christiane Phy, Riley Rinaldi, and Marta Lleshaj. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, choral students Luke Brescio, Timothy Coffey, Eliza May, James Dickman-Wilkes, Paula Galindo, Maki Mizutani, Annabelle Palermo, and James Urso sang the National Anthem, accompanied by Ms. Yunshim Kim.

Principal Joseph DiGiovanni gave the welcoming address to the graduates and their families, friends, and guests. Jane Anderson, the president of the Board of Education, followed Principal DiGiovanni to address the graduates on behalf of the Board. In her speech, she reminded the graduating class that “today was just the beginning of a wonderful journey ahead.”

Jennifer Johnson presented the Rye Rotary Award, an award given to the student who best exemplifies citizenship and has a special impact on the community at RMS, to Charlotte Brown.

Following the award, the first group of diplomas was handed out to Team R. After, Ananya Prasad, one of the graduates, sang “Vienna” by Billy Joel, accompanied by Ms. Yunshim Kim. It was a beautiful performance that had the entire crowd emotional. Team M was then presented with their diplomas. Claire Biddle presented a wonderful Student Speech and expressed how connected their class was as they grew together into more than a class, but a “family.” Then the final diplomas were given to Team S.

To conclude the ceremony, Principal DiGiovanni said his goodbyes to the Class of 2024, and Christina Cannon, acting Principal of RHS, welcomed them as the Class of 2028.
