It’s Garnets vs. Indians, Friday 7pm at Rye: the OG Speaks

MyRye.com is pleased to be providing the Old Garnet's (AKA former school board prez Steve Feeney) Garnet football write-ups. It's playoff football this week – Garnets vs. the Nyack Indians. See you at the field (at Rye, Friday, 7pm under the lights).

Here is OG's note on Saturday's game:

One (Ossining) little,

Two (Roosevelt) little,

Three (Nyack) little Indians . . . . .

. . . . and so goes the nursery rhyme, but what is it with these politically incorrect Section One High Schools anyway?

Rye’s got them all on the schedule this season and so far its Garnets 2-0 over the Ossining and Roosevelt tribes with Nyack’s warriors canoeing up Blind Brook this Friday night raiding Nugent Stadium in a classic first-round Section One Class A playoff battle.

Seems like there is lingering bad blood between these rivals of the 1980s with games fought annually from 1983 to 1991, and twice in 1991, ever since Billy Carlucci tomahawk-chopped the ball, pilfered it from a Nyack running back and scampered 60 yards to pay dirt and a 9-8 Rye win in the regular season contest.  The Indians got their revenge in the post-season bowl game 41-7 as payback for Rye’s regular season indiscretion.

Add into the mix that Nyack’s John Castellano and Rye’s Dino Garr are among the “Deans of Section One Football”, both with plenty of Section One and New York State Championships and Rye’s 7-3-0 series advantage doesn’t hold any water some twenty moons after the most recent game was played.  Nyack invades with a 4-2 record placing second in the Class A-West league with losses to Fox Lane by a singleton and Ossining by four.  The Garnets stand tall at 5-1 following last week’s 21-7 conquering of Harrison’s Huskies, and placed first in the Class A-South league despite a six-point, last minute loss to Eastchester early in the season.

The Old Garnet has never been very lucky at Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods, but circle the wagons I’m putting all my wampum on the Garnets – 28-21!
