The Boys Varsity Soccer Team defeated Somers High School on Monday 2-1 to move to 2-0 in its first week of play in the 2024 season. The Garnets previously defeated Spring Valley in a road contest 3-2 on Saturday, September 7th, in its first game of the year.

On Saturday, Kaden Zion scored a hat trick to account for all of Rye’s goals in a tight 3-2 decision. His first tally came off a turnover from the Spring Valley goalkeeper. His next two were both assisted by Peter Wilmot, and did not lack in the style department. Head Coach Jared Small described Zion’s second tally as a “work of beauty” after he buried a long stretch pass from Wilmot. To complete the hat trick, Zion capitalized on a Wilmot corner kick with a perfectly-placed header.

Small made sure to praise Lex Cox, Alex Rojas, and Kasen Scarperi for their unsung efforts in the win, as those three players helped Rye control the play for the most part and generate enough chances to score more than three.

On Monday, Rye once again came away with a one-goal victory, edging Somers 2-1 thanks to another goal from Zion and a game-winner from Felix Wismer. Cox picked up an assist on Zion’s icebreaking tally, while Rojas’ pinpoint pass set Wismer up from close range. At the time, Rye led 2-0 and looked dominant, but the second half was a different story.

“We found ourselves under a lot of pressure in the second half and did a nice job weathering the storm,” Small told MyRye.com after the game. “We learned a lot about our toughness and how we can better adjust in similar situations in the future.”

Small made sure to give props to his defensive line for stepping up amidst Somers’ pressure. Rei Nagata held his own exceptionally in his varsity debut, and his fellow defenders Zac Ramsey and Jack Gilroy together formed a very solid backline.

Rye plays again on Wednesday, September 11, against Pearl River. The game is currently scheduled for a 5:00pm kickoff at Nugent Stadium. Find the link to watch the event: Win vs Somers | Upcoming game vs Pearl River
