At 05:38 am Thursday, Rye FD was dispatched to a “significant” motor vehicle accident on I-287 Eastbound, past Exit 12, involving a tractor trailer. Upon arrival, the first responding units discovered that the semi-truck had veered off the highway, ended up down an embankment, and came to rest on the lower I-95/I-287 loop. Due to the challenging nature of the scene, the responding fire apparatus had to be repositioned to effectively address the situation. New York State Troopers were already on-site, with one officer in direct contact with the driver, providing initial aid.

Fire department personnel immediately began stabilizing the truck and initiating the extrication process. A White Plains rescue team was dispatched to assist at the scene. Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook EMS teams were also present, providing patient care while operations were underway. The driver of the tractor trailer was successfully extricated at 06:27 am and was subsequently transferred to EMS care. He was transported to Westchester Medical Center with a head laceration and for further medical evaluation.

Crews remained on scene until 10:00 am, assisting Vincent Service Inc. with the removal of the wreckage, fluid spill containment, and suppression of any hazards during the cutting operations. Once no further fire department action was required, and the scene was turned over to the New York State Police and the New York State Thruway Authority for further management.

Units from Rye Brook and Port Chester were called in to manage other emergency calls for Rye FD during the response.
