Does anyone have an idea what ‘SWIAC’ stood for in Rye Football lore? Whatever happened to the tradition-rich, Westchester-based, rivalries of yesteryear? In bygone seasons Rye’s schedule featured the same opponents, in the same order, year-after-year-after-year. It bred team, position and player rivalries directly resulting from playing each other consistently. A 1950s/early 1960s Garnet calendar would have looked like this:
Week 1 – Non-League* – Athletic Director Scheduled
Week 2 – Non-League* – Athletic Director Scheduled
Week 3 – Pelham – SWIAC Team
Week 4 – Pleasantville – SWIAC
Week 5 – Sleepy Hollow – SWIAC Team
Week 6 – Eastchester – SWIAC Team
Week 7 – Scarsdale
Week 8 – Harrison – SWIAC Team
*Schools such as Mamaroneck, Horace Greeley, Fox Lane, Ossining and Bronxville
Now it seems that the Garnet & Black have been hijacked, kidnapped into a new and different scheduling model of the Rockland County Football League. Take a close peek at Rye’s 2024 chart, you will find 57% of Rye’s regular season schedule orients to the northern-facing landfall of the Tappan Zee Bridge. Relative newcomers East Ramapo (no prior engagements), the Clarkstown twins (North once and South three contests) populate the 2024 calendar. Only Nyack with twenty-games has any history at all with the Garnets.
