Today, meet businessman and former Yahoo! Chairman Roy J. Bostock.

Roy J. Bostock is an American investor and businessman renowned for his leadership roles in major corporations, notably serving as chairman of Yahoo! Inc. from January 2008 to May 2012. 

Early Life and Education

Born in 1940 in Montclair, New Jersey, Bostock faced the loss of his father in a car accident during his senior year of high school. This tragedy led him to rely on football scholarships for his higher education. He received offers from Harvard and Duke University, ultimately choosing Duke, where he played football and baseball for the Blue Devils. Bostock graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He then earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1964. 

Career

Bostock began his career at Benton & Bowles in 1964, quickly ascending to senior leadership positions. Following the merger that created D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles in 1985, he served as president and later as chairman and CEO from 1990 to 1996. He also held leadership roles at The McManus Group and BCom3 Group, Inc. 

In 2008, Bostock became chairman of Yahoo! Inc., guiding the company through significant transitions until 2012. He has also served on the boards of Delta Air Lines and Morgan Stanley. 

Connection to Rye, New York

Bostock and his wife, Merilee, have been long-time residents of Rye, New York. Their commitment to the community is evident through their philanthropic efforts, including substantial donations to Duke University, resulting in the naming of the Bostock Library and Bostock Gates. Bostock served as the president of the Rye City School District school board. Their presence in Rye reflects their dedication to both local and broader educational initiatives.

Personal Life

The Bostocks have three children and seven grandchildren. Their family has maintained a strong connection to Duke University, with multiple generations attending the institution.
