Girls Basketball Shuts Down JJCR, Starts Season 1-0
The Rye Girls Varsity Basketball Team limited the visiting John Jay-Cross River Wolves to 33 points in their home opener on Friday evening (December 6), earning their first win of the 2024-25 season. Rye led almost the entire game, with the only exception being the first 90 seconds, when the score was 0-0.
“We had a solid team win to start the season,” Head Coach Margo Hackett told MyRye.com after the game. Her team maintained control of the game all night, highlighted by an 11-0 run in the second quarter, which stretched a 1-point lead into a comfortable 12-point cushion. The Garnets also scored the first ten points of the second half.
Phoebe Greto led the way for Rye, notching a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds (both team highs). Molly Kennedy chipped in 12 points and 5 rebounds, while Kathleen Denvir provided solid secondary scoring with 6 points and 6 rebounds.
Rye (1-0) will look to make it two in a row in their next game on Tuesday, December 10 (note: their game on Monday 12/9 has been cancelled). That contest is at Nyack High School against the RedHawks at 4:30pm, with a JV game to follow. Watch both here. Watch a replay of the win vs JJCR here.
