The Rye Hockey Team earned their first point of the 2024 season on Saturday afternoon, drawing last year’s Section X Division 1 champion-Massena Raiders to a 4-4 tie. It was a back-and-forth game that ended deadlocked after 51 minutes of regulation and five of overtime.

“We played with a lot of jam right from the start, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Dean Kim (assisted by Drew Dolan and Tyler McDermott) and Tyler McDermott (1st varsity goal) before they got one back at the end of the 1st,” Head Coach Pete Thomas told MyRye.com in his postgame report. “It was a high tempo game with both teams getting some good chances.”

Trevor Dolan scored Rye’s third goal in the second period off an assist from Ryan Draddy to give the Garnets a 3-2 lead. In the third period, Max Niejadlik scored a gorgeous end-to-end goal, capped off by a top shelf wrist shot, to tie the score at four. It remained that way for the remaining 12 minutes and change of the third period and five minutes of sudden death OT.

Davis Goodman earned the decision in his first varsity start, saving 18 of 22 shots against. By the end of 56 minutes, Rye unofficially outshot Massena 34-22, but could not find the game-winning tally.

Rye (0-2-1) will look for their first win of the season when they host Byram Hills on Wednesday, December 18. The game is scheduled for 6:30pm at Playland Ice Casino. Watch the tie vs the Raiders here (note: a Livebarn account is required to view).
