Hamish Fenton, age 14, has passed away after a battle with cancer.

The Rye community supported Fenton’s fight in a myriad of ways. Last spring, Rye City Council declared it was Hamish Fenton Day in the City. The Rye Middle School 8th grader battled a rare pediatric cancer that has fewer than 200 known cases.

There have been a variety of fundraisers over the last couple of years to help the family, including a GoFundMe launched in October 2023 that has raised over $550,000.

“We generally don’t dedicate days to people,” said former Rye Mayor Josh Cohn to an expanse of Hamish’s friends in City Council chambers last March when the City dedicated an official day in his honor. “It’s just not something that we as a council do. But we’ve just heard so much that’s terrific about you, Hamish, that when we heard it was going to be your birthday, we said, oh, gee, we’ve got to do this.”
