Memorial Day at Jay Estate and Jay Cemetery

John Jay, a patriot, nation builder and peacemaker, is buried in Rye in the private cemetery he established in 1804 for himself, his family – including parents, siblings, his beloved wife Sarah and his descendants and their spouses. It is the oldest active cemetery in the nation associated with a pre-eminent figure of the Revolutionary War. It is a tranquil place closed to the public out of respect for the privacy of the Jay family though it has been opened on special occasions for scholars and dignitaries.
Please gather at the Jay Mansion at 1pm. Groups will go to the cemetery from there for a brief program and observance with Jay Cemetery President Peter Doane and Rye’s American Legion Post 128. A reception at the mansion will follow.
The event is FREE but registration is required.
