The City of Rye Police Department arrested a Rhode Island man on Friday for car theft.

Officers stopped a vehicle on Forest Avenue in the area of the Playland Parkway, after a resident called to report the driver was acting suspiciously. The police arrested Elvis A. Hopkins, 42, of Providence, Rhode Island, for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree and other Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.

An investigation determined the vehicle being driven by Hopkins had been reported stolen to the Cranston Rhode Island Police Department earlier in the day. Hopkins was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th degree a class E Felony and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 3rd degree a Misdemeanor. Hopkins was released with an appearance ticket returnable to Rye City Court on May 16, 2023.

Rye PD reminds you that booking charges are merely accusations and the defendant(s) are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

  1. Jay,
I got a “Grandpa” call this am and reported the caller’s telephone number to the Rye police. My standard response to these calls is “Nobody calls me Grandpa.”
