The 7th Annual Rye YMCA Cardboard Boat Regatta, held in the Y’s Brookside pool last Friday, has anointed new champions. Started in 2014 and suspended during the COVID years 2020-2022, this year saw a dozen cardboard (with lots of duct tape) boats enter the race.
In the end, Aoto and Kaito Yamamoto finished at the top of the heap with ingenious hand paddles that contributed to the stealthy design and speed of their amphibious craft (see the video below to study the technique of the brothers Yamamoto). Scarlett Plauche and Kirian Ranado each won for best design.
A Rye YMCA source told MyRye.com “it was a great evening filled with laughter and creativity.” No word at press time if the American Yacht Club has called to recruit the two young mariner champions.
