Rye Boys Varsity Soccer chopped down Woodlands on Tuesday for a 5 – 1 win away.

“We received important contributions from 25 players, and it was good to see us have a few sustained spells of possession,” said Rye Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Jared Small. “The guys showed a strong spirit and support of each other as we started a busy stretch of 9 matches in the final 19 days of the regular season.”

Alex Rojas opened the scoring in the 4th minute, converting a Tommy Broderick cross for his first goal of the season. A few minutes later, Fin Kearney set up Broderick to help put the Garnets up 2-0.

The scoreline remained the same until the 22nd minute when Kevin Yunga made a nice individual effort in the attacking third and tucked a tidy shot just inside the left post. The Garnets scored two more goals just before halftime, with Charlie Margiloff converting a feed from Chase Pepper and Joseph Chai finishing a Margiloff feed to extend the lead to 4-1 at the half.

The final goal of the match was scored in the 50th minute when Broderick slammed home a beautiful cross from Ollie Lincoln to extend the lead to 5-1.

Several members of the squad had strong performances, with Alexander van der Voort leading all players with 57 minutes played on the afternoon. van der Voort was composed on the ball in the center of the midfield, while Alex Lee also put in a high quality shift as the starting right center back. Zach Ramsey made his first career varsity start, bringing strength and precision to the backline.

The goalkeeping responsibilities were split by Martin Fields and Aydan Breen, with the two juniors each making a pair of saves to keep the Woodlands attack in check.

The season is now 5 – 2. The Garnets travel to Pelham Wednesday afternoon for a 4:30pm game (watch it).
