A fundraiser is soaring for an 11 year-old Rye boy impacted by a rare cancer. Cassie and Gus Fenton’s son Hamish has already undergone several grueling surgeries and has begun chemotherapy at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
The rarity of the cancer and related treatment options mean costs are likely not all covered by insurance. In only two days, over $185,000 has been raised across the Rye community and elsewhere towards the campaign goal of $250,000. 483 donations range from $25 to $10,000 with the average at $391.
“Those who know Hamish, know he is an exceptional human!,” says the fundraising page. “A beautiful soul inside and out, a multi-sport athlete loved by his teammates, a cherished friend to so many here in New York and his home in Australia, and a delightful brother to Archer, Jagger and Lola. Hamish is handling this diagnosis as only he would – concerned for everyone else and always looking on the bright side! Always courageous and positive, polite to the medical staff even when they cause him pain, and worrying about where his beautiful mum will sleep in his small hospital room.”
The fundraisers say monies raised will go towards Hamish’s treatment and if there are any funds remaining they will be given to “pediatric cancer research or a related cancer charity”.
