Rye resident Charles P. "Chuck" Steuber, a sugar daddy to the sport of croquet, has died at the age of 87. According to a report in the Palm Beach Post, Steuber was a summer resident of Rye who spent $4.5 million to build a West Palm Beach croquet mecca that became the National Croquet Center, the largest of its kind in the world.

"Peck said Mr. Steuber’s legacy will live on through the world-class center he created when croquet in this country relied on a hodge-podge of local clubs. Mr. Steuber became a member of the U.S. Croquet Association Hall of Fame in 2001. Next year, the center will host the croquet international championship, with 80 players from around the world.
"He was probably the most important man in croquet in the last 20 years," Peck said. "We will not forget what he did and we’re going to keep it going.""
