Yelping When Rye Grill Charges for Ice in Your Drink

We know times are tough, but charging for ice in your scotch? Ouch…

Rye grill ice $1 pic According to a Rye Grill and Bar patron on Yelp, the newly re-done Rye institution charged the couple an extra $1 for ice in each of their MacCallan scotches. Keep that up and their business will melt…

"They did however charge us $1 for ice. When we got the bill. One scotch was $2 more than the other. We asked about it and the waiter said that ice costs $1 and he forgot to add it to the first drink price. The bartenders were upset with him so he just doubled it for the second drink."

  1. Wow. At prices like these, the new fashion accessory will be a mini cooler to bring your own ice. How soon before they start to charge rent for the glass?

  2. The Rye Grill is loud, obnoxious and sadly serves mediocre food. And did I mention loud? We went on a Saturday night (our first mistake) and it was so ungodly loud no one could hear a thing. They did a wonderful job with the construction, but seemed to forget installing acoustics. Awful.

  3. That’s right Scooter, you concern yourself with ice, while the whole Rye City government is making the community look like Jack A. Maybe you should buy some of that ice to cool things off in city hall. The price is irrelevant.

  4. I HAVE TO SAY, I completely agree w/the noise thing. Met a friend there for drinks & really don’t see what all the hoopla is all about. They have a lot of nerve complaining about the City extending Parking Meter hours while they charge there customers for ice. Talk about “SELFISH”!

  5. the article is obviously wrong. you get charged more for scotch on the rocks then you do for scotch and water because you get more scotch. the bartender probably made a mistake. of course the rye grill is loud. it was before and it will be now. when you have so many A-holes going out to be seen and see then what do you expect. it is a Rye look at me pageant and you all want to be seen there and see who else is there. stop your belly aching and man up. whaaaa it is too loud my ears hurt, whaaaa they charged me an extra dollar on my 14.00 scotch, whaaa i dress up in a costume that looks like a big turd and i want to be taken seriously, whaaaa my husband is screwing my neighbor, whaaaa i don’t know where to go drink and drive, whaaaaaa i am a big grown up baby.

  6. outrageous. just had firm dinner there, place was ok. on general principal, never go there again based on them charging for ice. dont care if drought hits and i am on fire and it is the only place open, wont walk thru their doors. hope the guy Sol that own the place freezes in his cooler

  7. Love the waaaaaaaaaaaaaa comment! it is true that you get more scotch (or whatever liquor) on the rocks than you do in a mixed drink, which is usually about .50 to 1.00 more. although it should ring up as scotch rocks not as an ice charge because it leaves it open for all the waaaaaaaaas!

  8. If you’re going to whine about the high cost of drinking in these tough times, try drinking some Cracklin’ Rosie in a paper bag – or Thunderbird, for a real kick! Save the single malts for those who can afford it, like bankers getting government handouts.

  9. Q.D.,
I’d pay to see you & Scooter downing some Old E. Neither one of you could probably handle a 40! Isn’t it against City Policy to sell liquor that doesn’t meet Rye standards? I wonder if The Rye Bar & Grille will serve it on the rocks!

  10. Out of Touch,
You are Out of Touch! MD 20-20 is never served on the rocks, but is “Served Very Cold”. Says so, right on the label.
And Olde English? I prefer the 800 series, which separates the men from the girlie-boys. Bittersweet as the barrio, with a slight bourbon aftertaste. Though not as well-rounded as the original OE, this high-powered V8 of a forty gets the job done.
If you are willing to pay for QD and me to scarf some down, you won’t be living in Rye long!

  11. The Night Train is all business when it pulls into the station. All aboard to nowhere – woo wooo! The night train runs only one route: sober to stupid with no roundtrip tickets available, and a strong likelihood of a train wreck along the way. Tastes like Thunderbird with some Kool-Aid-like substance added to try to mask the Clorox flavor.

  12. I do. A locomotive with a distinctly 50’s look about it. We used to drink it while listening to James Brown’s “Night Train” –

    Alllll Aboard… The NIGHT TRAIN!

Tickets were only a dollar a bottle, if I recall. We had to travel to the seedier part of Port Chester to find a supplier. Ahhh, youth!

  13. Basically take a ride down Rt 1 to Wolf’s market. No matter how old you were they would sell you any alcohol you wanted. What a great store that was.

  14. Looks like Jay Sears next victim is Rye Grill. In these hard economic times Jay has decided embarrassing and humiliating The Rye Grill is fair game. Does Mr. Sears realize the hard work that goes into building a business? Does he understand the amount of personal capital that is put on the line every time a small business is opened or renovated? Looks like the only viable business in Rye will be myrye.com if Jay Sears continues his irresponsible journalism. Next time you run into Jay Sears out in Rye ask him, “Who’s next Jay? Me?”

  15. I personally doubt that the news of a surcharge on ice will destroy this restaurant. If they want to capitalize on it, and have some fun, they could change policy and advertize “Free ice with every cocktail!”.
Maybe any publicity is good publicity – and maybe the Rye Grill and Bar will realize there’s a sizable contingent of potential customers out there who want to both re-live a portion of their youth and stretch their drinking dollars by being served “Rosie in a skirt” (Wild Irish Rose in a paper bag), buy a ticket on the Night Train, or visit Olde England without leaving Rye!

  16. Scooter,
You must so proud to be an expert on alcohol… I wonder if that makes you an Alholic???NIGHT TRAIN!!!! HEY you have just described The Rye City Council!!!
“Sober to Stupid”…”Train Wreck”…”All aboard to NoWhere”… YUP – THAT JUST ABOUT SUMS IT UP!!!!!!!!!!
RyeChick…ASK SCOOTER what that[meters] is all about!

  17. I miss “The Mug” – puke on the floor and all!! I’m certain all of you that remember miss it too.

  18. Scooter,

In these economic times when restaurants are competing against each other for a bigger slice of the discresionary spending pie, a story about how a restaurant charges $2.00 for ice is a big deal. You must not be in business for yourself.

  19. Next victim –

News Flash – Restaurants are always competing against each other for a bigger slice of the discretionary spending pie, even in good times.
Consumers are free to choose how they spend their money, and a whole bunch of factors come into play when they decide where they want to eat when they dine out. Food selection, quality and quantity, level of service, wine selection, atmosphere, price, whether or not they’re kid-friendly and possibly other clientele are usually high on the list. Previous personal experience is usually a big input as well, of course.
I’m sorry, but I just can’t believe that someone who’s willing and able to pay $19 for a lobster salad, $18 for a goat cheese salad or $13 for popcorn shrimp (not to mention $14 for a drink) is going to carp about how they can’t afford an extra $2.
Some on this site claim the restaurant made a mistake. Let’s face it, the people who normally wait on tables are hired because they’re (hopefully) good with people, not because they’ve earned their accounting degrees, so they’re fully capable of making such an error. Others claim, with some justification, that any drink on the rocks carries a higher price, because the customer gets more product.
If $2 is such a big deal, take it out of the tip and let the waiter know exactly why he didn’t get more. That’s one way to be sure he’ll never make the same mistake again.
And if the restaurant finds they’re losing business because their drink prices – or ice prices – are too high, the simple answer is to lower prices. Anyone with a decent high school degree knows there’s a relationship between price and demand – by lowering price, you increase demand and may actually increase net profit. You don’t need to be in business for yourself to know this simple relationship.
Finally, I have to question why someone would be drinking a single malt scotch while eating a salad. It’s sorta of like smoking a cigar while eating quiche, don’t you think? I would have expected these two women would have opted for a chardonnay.

  20. The Rye Grill is mind-numbingly noisy and chaotic. Plus the food stinks. It’s a real disappointment. Nice wall paper though.

  21. WOW SCOOTER….SEEMS LIKE YOU DEFINITELY MISSED THE BOAT WHEN YOU STARTED YOUR CAREER…. YOU SHOULD MOST DEFINITELY JUMP SHIP FROM THE “TRAIN WRECK” YOU NOW SAIL ON!!!
ENJOYED YOUR POINT OF VIEWS LAST NIGHT….

  22. Go to the Town Dock–great food, service, and there is no charge for ice. Quiet for the most part as well.

  23. POPPY’S IS OPEN ON FRIDAY NIGHTS!!
    SORRY SCOOTER…NO LIQUOR!!!
AND YOU CAN HAVE ALL THE ICE YOUR HEART DESIRES…”FREE OF CHARGE”!!

  24. I agree-the Dock is far better then it has ever been. Fun local crowd and really good seafood–Clam Choder

  25. THE GRILL? I Mean really what are they the second coming of christ? Hate to dissapoint everyone but they suck! I’d rather spend my money on good food at the dock or kelly’s and way better service as well! Good luck with the 40 or 50 something meat market appeal. Hopefully that sustains you for the next 30 years.

  27. Let’s start a pool. The winner will be able to claim the title of “The Grand PooBaa of Embarrassment and Humiliation”. To win the honor of this title all a contestent has to do is pick the identity of the next Rye property owner or small business which will fall victim to the embarrassment and humiliation of Jay Sears’s myrye.com. The winner will hold the title until our next pool.

Are Jay Sears, Joe Sack and Mr. Flotie Rye’s Axis of Evil?

  28. In my opinion, Jay Sears and Joe Sack have their noses so far up Mr. Flotie’s ass that all you can see is the soles of their shoes.

  29. BRING IT ON JUDGE!!! WE ALL COULD USE SOME “INTELLIGENT” INCITE!!!

  30. The real OLD-TIMER’s remember The Rye Sweet Shoppe, Lepler Brother’s, and, before that Webber’s, O’Dell’s Hardware Store, The Rye Market (they would deliver)..Thomas’s (where I’d get a cherry coke and a frozen Devil Dog after school…The Prep Shop (owned and operated by Joe Cox)…And, God Bless Frank the Barber, who’s been in Rye forever!!
Let’s not forget The Gift In Hand..There used to be a A&P located right in the middle of Purchase Street….And, sawdust on the floor of the Rye Fish Market !!!

  31. M.J.,
I’M not that young & remember most of those.I was trying to stick to the Restaurant theme. Since you did put some out there that I would have to refer to Dad about you are definitely in the “OLDER TIMER” than I! LOL!

  32. yeah those old places were great..but guess what life goes on. maybe you should all live in a glass bubble and sit around talking about your “trick knee” and “ahhhh crap my burstitis”…weren’t those great times….ahh jeez i used to walk 6 miles to school all up hill! other than 20 banks in rye i happen to like the new restaurants and thanks to that group of restaurant purveyors who actually open restaurants like rye grille rubys and others and actually care about the customers and quality of food and the community. whaaaa why can’t rye be the way it used to be 20 years ago…whaaaa i used to eat at woolworths and i can’t anymore…whaaa why won’t anyone listen to me talk about the way it used to be…whaaa i want my frozen devil dog and cherry coke…whaaaa i miss baskin robbins….where is my rocky road ice cream. guess what…head to pathmark buy some devil dogs and a 6 pack of cherry coke and don’t leave the house. do us all a favor. you can still go to many great places to eat. depending on your budget you can find a wide variety of eateries for the budget minded and those who want to splurge a little…. whaaa maybe i should watch reruns of andy griffith and complain about how it used to be…(slapping said person across the cheek) wake up dude…it is the year 2009…your dreaming again. whaaaa

  33. Hey Whaaaaa….
Read my remark again..Or, have someone who has a working knowledge of the English language and comprehension read it to you…I never mentioned NOT enjoying Rye as it is today…Rye is a lovely place and the new restaurants are great..I was just strolling down memory lane…I’m not living in the past…Just citing memorable locations in Rye…But, while your on the subject, the flavors of a frozen Devil Dog and a fountain Cherry Coke from Thomas’ will never be replaced by a box of Devil Dogs and a six-pack of today’s Cherry Cokes……….why so grumpy chum?…
