George Croughan Obituary; Scholarship Fund Set for Children
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening and a scholarship fund has been established for the Croughan children – details on both are below.
CROUGHAN, GEORGE F. 2010-01-17
George F. Croughan abruptly left this earth on January 14, 2010. While we may not understand all of the circumstances involving George's passing, we do know that he loved his family above all else: Judy, his wife of 20+ years, his sons, Colin, William, and Mark, and cherished dog, Suzy. George was a fixture at Rye's sporting events and an enthusiastic supporter for all his children's activities, whether selling 50/50 raffles at the RHS football games, or cheering for CYO & Rye Recreation basketball or RHS crew regattas. He loved to cook and drink wine with friends and was a terrific storyteller. An avid fisherman, he relished his fishing trip to Jackson Hole last summer with his cousin Tom O'Toole, was loved among his community and participated in several local athletic events such as the N.Y.C. Marathon (twice) , Jarden Westchester Triathlon, and local 5 K races in town.
George was an accomplished writer, and he used to say he wanted to write a column, Tails of the Dog Park, about his adventures at Rye Town Park. He was instantly recognizable in a crowd for his 6'6" height and athletic stature. George recently completed a long and accomplished career at International Paper and was a member of the Manursing Island Club. Aside from his immediate family, George is survived by his mother, Patricia Leonard Croughan of Tuckahoe, N.Y., his brother Brian Croughan of Cranberry, PA., his sister Peggy Gaffney and her husband James, and niece Kristen and nephew Jimmy of Cary, N.C. He was predeceased by his brothers James and Kenneth, and his father James. He was the administrator of the James R Croughan Memorial Scholarship Memorial Fund.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of support and ask that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Croughan Children's Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Happy Mullooly, 22 Fordham Ave, Rye. The family will receive friends on Tuesday January 19, at the Graham Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Resurrection on Wednesday at 11 AM. GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME 1036 Boston Post Road Rye, NY 10580 914-967-0129.
Godspeed George. You left us too early.
God Bless George and his family. He was my son’s baseball coach. My children are in the same classes as his sons. He was a good man. May God watch over all of them now.
Very nice turnout tonight for Judy and the boys. I hope that everybody keeps them in their prayers.
God bless you George.
