Today, Monday, August 19, Leaders of Tomorrow, will host the first workshop of their Annual Education Enrichment Summer Program at Gagliardo Park. This year’s edition, their 21st annual program, will focus on “Sustainable Best Practices: In the Garden and Beyond…”
The three-day program was first held in 1993 and was created to facilitate interaction among community residents of multiple generations through workshops and community service.
This year’s program will take place on three different days, one in August, in September at The Bird Homestead and finally in October at The Knapp House Colonial and Indigenous Gardens. The Leaders of Tomorrow Volunteers, led by Director and Co-Founder Douglas Carey, created and maintain vegetable and perennial gardens at all three locations.
The garden at Gagliardo Park is celebrating their 20th year or growing season, the garden at the Bird Homestead was re-established in 2000 and the two gardens at the Knapp House were begun in 2002. The group does all of their work by hand, without the aid of any power tools or gas powered machines. They have been growing a wide range of plants and collecting seeds for over 20 years while using the gardens to educate participants in a variety of responsible, sustainable practices.
Monday's Workshop Details
This month’s workshop will begin at 5:30 PM on Monday August 19th, the day before the Full Moon. Participants will learn about the genesis and history of Gagliardo Park, the origins of the garden, a tour of the garden, and then engage in two gardening activities which will focus on the costs and benefits of a variety of gardening practices used in around the Park today. The day’s activities will finish by 7 PM with the taste of a special dish made primarily from fresh ingredients from the garden and will toast the appearance of the rising moon over the eastern portion of the park.
All activities are free and open to residents of all ages. Families are encouraged to come together. For more information or to reserve a spot in next week’s workshop, please contact Douglas Carey by sending an email to [email protected] or by phone at 914-305-1721.
