Letter: Former Council Peeps Say Jovanovich is Their Man
November 1, 2013
Letter to the Editor from Carolyn Cunningham and Arthur H. Stampleman
Dear Editor
We are writing to say how fortunate Rye is to have Peter Jovanovich as a candidate for Mayor of Rye. He can bring extensive, valuable experience to the position and we support his election.
Mr. Jovanovich is currently a member of the Rye City Council, serving effectively and collegially. His prior contributions to public service includes Treasurer of the Friends of Rye Nature Center, a member of the Rye Planning Commission, a member of the Board of Architectural Review, and Council Liaison to the Rye Free Reading Room where he contributed to the resolution of some key issues.
More importantly, he has well-thought-out positions on major problems facing the city: improving Rye’s infrastructure, getting control over city employee and retiree health care costs, protecting land use commissions from political interference, and seeking an outside firm to operate Whitby Castle at Rye Golf Club.
Peter had a long, successful career in the publishing industry that evidenced varied management experience that he can bring to bear in Rye. That experience included several senior management roles including President of a subsidiary of a Fortune 500 Company, and Chairman and CEO of Pearson Education, the world’s largest education company.
Philanthropy also features in Mr. Jovanovich’s world, particularly with the Alfred Harcourt Foundation providing college scholarships to approximately 110 low-income students each year.
Yours truly,
Carolyn Cunningham, former Democratic Rye Councilwoman
Arthur H. Stampleman, former Democratic Rye Councilman
