A Presidential Anniversary That Started in Rye
George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush were marid on this day in 1945 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rye. Barbara Bush is a Rye native who grew up in Indian Village.
"Jan. 6, 1945. Former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush, Rye, N.Y. George and Barbara met in 1941 at a prep-school Christmas dance when he was 17 years old and she was 16 years old. A year and a half later, the couple became engaged, just before he went off to fight in World War II as a Navy torpedo bomber pilot. He named three of his planes after her: Barbara, Barbara II and Barbara III. They were married when he returned on leave at the First Presbyterian Church in Rye."
