Rye PD: Stranger Danger, Pervy Pickup Attempted on 15 Year Old Student
Rye Schools have shared this warning from Rye PD Tuesday afternoon. A white male in his 40s driving a black sedan approached a 15 year old female student. He was in his car and she was walking.
Nothing transpired, but the police are warning again to speaking about "stranger danger" and how to handle it.
Here is the note sent by the schools:
"Dear Rye City School District Parents and Guardians:
The City of Rye Police Department has just informed the District of a suspicious incident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Rye. Here is the description of what transpired, according to the Rye Police Department:
"At approximately 3 p.m. today, we had a 15 year old female student at RHS respond to police headquarters with her mother. She reports that at approximately 1 p.m. she was outside of her home on Milton Road when a white male in his 40s operating a black, small four door sedan (not an SUV) stopped his vehicle and said “hi” to her. Believing the male was lost, she said "hi" back to him whereupon he told her that she was beautiful. The student then said "thank you" and began walking away. According to the student, the suspect then called to her to not leave as he wanted to give her his card. The student kept walking and the suspect vehicle left the area. The suspect never exited the vehicle nor did he make any threats.
When incidents like this are brought to our attention, it is an opportunity for us to review safety rules with our children. Please take time to speak to your children about avoiding contact with strangers and circumstances that may increase their vulnerability. Encourage them to speak with you about situations that make them feel uncomfortable. Below, please find some "Stranger Danger" reminders to use when talking with your children:
· Do not talk to strangers
· Never approach a vehicle with a stranger inside
· Never enter a vehicle with a stranger
· When possible, walk in public areas and walk in groups
· If approached by a stranger, run to safety
· Try to remember license plate numbers or other descriptive information
· Call 911 immediately to report suspicious behavior to the Police or ask an adult to do so for you
I encourage you to reinforce basic safety precautions with your children on an ongoing basis. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Sincerely,
Frank Alvarez
Superintendent"
