Last Saturday, September 17, 2016, Kuder Island Colony, Inc. (KIC) participated in the New York State Beach Cleanup Event in conjunction with the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society. The event is part of the annual International Coastal Cleanup event sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, DC. Kuder Island Colony, Inc. s the holding company for the 30-odd cottages on Hen Island.
During last Saturday’s event 16 volunteers representing KIC collected and cataloged approximately 250 pounds of debris from one‐mile of shoreline at KIC’s Hen Island property in Milton Harbor, Rye, NY ‐ much of it plastic and foam litter. All of the debris originates from off‐island sources and washes up on the shores of Hen Island. The information collected during this cleanup will be provided to the American Littoral Society for inclusion into the state‐wide data.
Today’s event marks the fifth consecutive year of KIC’s participation in this state‐wide effort to enlist volunteers to document and cleanup shoreline debris. In 2015, 7,723 volunteers cleaned and documented 125,544 pounds of debris along 250 miles of New York State’s shoreline.
KIC thanked the volunteers who participated in the cleanup and the Town of Rye Supervisor’s Office and the City of Rye DPW for assisting with disposal of the collected debris.
That’s a great start. Hopefully they will address the pollution and mosquito issues that have been plaguing and threatening our Sound Shore communities for years as depicted in the below linked story from 2008.

Please stay tuned for the upcoming movie titled “Hen Island the Movie” where Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from Riverkeeper and Terry Backer from the Long Island Soundkeeper expose the long allowed cover-up on Hen Island.
