Moving American History in Rye: Saturday Tour of Mile Marker 25
The City Council has scheduled a visit to Ben Franklin's mile marker 25 located on Boston Post Road and Old Boston Post Road for this Saturday, October 1st, at 11:00 a.m. to review the proposal to move the mile marker.
When Ben Franklin, one of America's founding fathers, was Postmaster General, he directed the mile markers be installed along the Boston Post Road. BPR was the mail throughfare starting at Federal Hall in lower Manhattan and Boston.
The public is invited and welcome to attend. The conservators who have been working with the Landmarks Committee will be in attendance. A consideration is to move the mile marker to a nearby location where it will be more accessible to the public, including school groups, so teachers can present this amazing piece of American history.
The landmarks committee in Rye has been working to preserve the mile markers since at least 2012.
