On Thursday, October 19, 2017, from 7 to 9 PM at Wainwright House, the Rye Synagogue CSA (community-supported agriculture) will sponsor a presentation by local beverage expert Francois Steichen that will make sense of the explosion of local, organic, high-quality wines, beers, ciders and liquors that has occurred in New York State since 2000.
The presentation will be followed by a tasting of red and white wines from the Finger Lakes region. Contribution is $10.
• New York State currently has close to 1,000 wineries, breweries, distilleries and cideries. Only 8 years ago, that number was less than 300.
• Attendees will learn how New York State is leading the national movement to help reform agriculture indirectly by reducing the regulatory burdens on wineries, cideries, breweries and distilleries that have existed since the repeal of Prohibition 85 years ago.
• Participants will learn about leading producers; where these beverages are available; and why they are more interesting, varied and innovative than national brands.
Francois Steichen is a writer on wine who holds the Diploma in Wine and Spirits (DWS) from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust. This is the gold standard in wine education, and the pre-requisite to study for the Master of Wine. Francois is also a Manager at Glenville Wine & Spirits, in Greenwich, Connecticut. He writes periodically for the Greenwich Free Press, and greatly enjoys researching and writing about wine geography, wine history, and the wines of the Finger Lakes and Luxembourg. He lives in Old Greenwich, CT.
