A TISKET – A TASKET – A TUSKSER IN A GARNET AND BLACK
Just what is a Tusker and why are Somers High School sports teamscalled the Tuskers? Modern social media provides a multi-faceted response including:
It seems Rye always faces both an early season match and a Section One Class A playoff game opposing the SOMERS TUSKERS, and almost always on the road. That is the exact case once again in 2019. The Old Garnet doesn’t get why there is always a home-game scheduling imbalance skewed towards Somers, but that is the reality to be faced by the Garnets Friday night. Elephants never forget, and neither do the Tuskers, who vividly recall crashing the Rye goal-line for the winning touchdown with eighteen seconds remaining in the second game of the season goring the Garnets 28-24 and posting the only loss on the Garnets.
Once again under the big tent at Somers, this year’s playoff circus pits two legendary ringmasters ranked in the high wires of New York State Football Coaches. Top Tusker Tony DeMateo ranks thirdin NYS history with 354 wins at Roosevelt and Somers, while Garnets’ maestro, Dino Garr, is in sixth place at 312 between Rye and Westlake. DeMateo is the winningest of all active New York State coaches while Garr follows in second place statewide. Rye leads this budding rivalry with the Silver and Red 9-7-0 (.563) as the Garnets rumble up-county. Olay olay! Garnets frustrate - Tuskers lose their luster.
It’s Rye by a corn husk, 20-18.
BUST THE TUSKERS ! DUST THE TUSKERS ! HUSK THE TUSKERS ! RUST THE TUSKERS
