VIDEO: Black Lives Matter Speech by Rye guy and Westchester County Executive George Latimer
About 1,000 of your neighbors participated in a Black Lives Matter protest and march on Saturday, June 13th.
The peaceful group gathered at Rye High School at 2pm and then marched to the village green for speeches from local officials and activists. The group then resumed its march, winding around Rye before ending back at the high school.
Here is the speech of Rye guy and Westchester County Executive George Latimer. He has lived in Rye for 35 years. Latimer talked about growing up on South 14th Avenue in Mt. Vernon as one of the only white kids and seeing his black friends experience racism. He also reminds people if they want change to complete the census and make sure to vote. “My generation did not finish the job,” said Latimer. He spoke about changes since he was a kid in 1970, but acknowledged more is needed. “We need to push forward for progress.” He called for implicit bias training for every police officer in Westchester County.
