Car Fire on I-95 Extinguished by Rye FD

Rye FD extinguished a car fire on Interstate 95 in Rye Monday afternoon.

The initial call just before 2pm was for a motor vehicle accident between two cars, with one vehicle stuck in the middle in the northbound lane of I-95, just south of the Central Avenue bridge. A second call then reported the one vehicle still in the roadway, a MINI Cooper, was on fire. “The car was fully involved,” Lieutenant John McDwyer told MyRye.com.

All five Rye units responded – Engine 191 and 192, Ladder 25 and Chief Cars 2421 and 2423. “(We) exhausted all the water on 191 and were able to deploy 192 to finish the suppression and clean-up,” said McDwyer.

In coordination with Rye PD and NY State Troopers, the northbound lane was closed for 10-15 minutes. After that point, a single lane was opened at reduced speed.

There were two occupants in the MINI Cooper and at least one in the second car. One person was evaluated on scene by by Port Chester – Rye – Rye Brook EMS. No one was transported.
