In one of the first athletic competitions for the season (finally!), Rye Garnet Boys Varsity Soccer won its season opener 1-0 at Harrison Saturday afternoon.
“Rye’s midfield of Ian Koford and Michael Desmond helped build play through the center of the park,” said Coach Jared Small. “Stijn Terlouw and Alex Vollbrecht combined on a beautiful “give and go” and Vollbrecht calmly finished the opportunity to put Rye up 1-0 in the 10th minute.”
The Garnets generated a few other opportunities in the first half but couldn’t convert. Philip Hovers earned the shutout, aided by strong team defending from the starting back four of Luke Burnham, John Sterkaj, Jack Formon, and Jonas van Beurden. The win comes in the season opener for a new look Garnets team that took the field for the first time since playing Jericho in the New York State Final Four in late November 2019.
