On Monday evening, Varsity Girls Soccer topped Scarsdale 2-1 at an away game to become the Southern Westchester Large School Champions. The team ends their victorious season with a 11-1-1 record.

“Rye Garnets displayed tremendous discipline to come back to defeat Scarsdale, the undefeated AA number one team in the tournament,” said Rich Savage, Girls Varsity Coach. “Freshman Sage Ruttenberg had a tremendous goal line save to prevent a second goal for Scarsdale. As the game progressed, Rye played with more composure and started to set the pace of the game.”

Junior center midfield player Hannah Bertisch controlled the middle of the field for the Garnets. She was able shut the center of the field for Scarsdale while distributing the ball out wide to help Rye’s attack. It was Hannah’s defensive stop and perfect pass to freshman Maddy Walsh who beat Scarsdale’s keeper to tie up the game 18 minutes into the second half.

After the goal, Rye continued to pressure the Raiders. The defensive line held strong, while outside midfield players and captains Meredith Tutun and Zoe Rockas outworked Scarsdale. The score was still tied in the end of regulation time and the game went into two ten minute overtime periods.

With just 4 and 28 seconds minutes left in the second overtime, Reilly Traynor came up with a big defensive stop and passed the ball up to striker Annabelle Thomas. As Scarsdale’s defense collapsed on Thomas, she put through a perfect pass to Zoe Rockas who finished with a perfect shot in the lower right hand side of the goal. The entire team played a locked down defense to hold onto their lead and upset top seeded Scarsdale.
