A little while longer.

The winter season for “high risk” sports such as basketball was scheduled to start this past Monday. Then the winter storm caused a delay. And now there are a few more “health hurdles” from the local County Department of Health before the start of play.

Primary is athletes must submit a current physical exam form, and any athlete who has had COVID-19 must obtain a cardiovascular clearance from a health care provider. The new guidance was released yesterday from Dr. Sherlita Amler, who runs the County Department of Health – you can read all the details here.

In a note, Rye Athletic Director Susan Reid Dullea said “We are working as quickly as we can to meet the requirements, ensure safety and begin our programs.”

Good afternoon Rye athletic families,

Yesterday, the Westchester County Department of Health released additional guidance and requirements for high-risk winter sports to begin. We were scheduled to begin official practices today, but must first comply with the guidance. To help us expedite the process and begin our programs, please submit the following to the High School Health Office as soon as possible, if you have not already done so:

  • An updated NYS School Health Examination Form (Physical Examination Form) dated on or after July 1, 2020
  • A cardiovascular clearance from a health care provider if your athlete has been diagnosed with COVID-19 at any point
  • A completed consent form for participation in athletics

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. We are working as quickly as we can to meet the requirements, ensure safety and begin our programs. Our current sports programs that have already been running will continue to do so while we work to get the official seasons started. I will be attending a meeting with Section One officials tomorrow to discuss the details and scheduling for the upcoming seasons. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Susan Reid Dullea

Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics
