Boys Varsity Football Bridges Nyack To Take Sectional Championship 36-9
Rye Boys Varsity Football bridged Nyack on Sunday afternoon, running away with the Class A south regional bowl championship 36-9. The win ends an undefeated 6-0 season that many thought might never happen given “high risk” sports were not permitted due to the global coronavirus pandemic until the current “fall 2” season this spring.
“We opened up the offense this game, threw the ball a little more,” said Rye Boys Varsity Football Coach Dino Garr. Calling attention to Liam Lavelle’s four touchdown catches, Garr continued “His legacy of his family has just continued tremendously in terms of just a great high school career. We are going to miss him. It’s going to be tough to not have a Lavelle around for a while.”
On the defense, Garr finished “I thought we played outstanding – we contained their running game.”
Asked about the successful season in the context of the pandemic, Garr said “It was a godsend that we were able to do it and that the seniors stayed with it and to think we did not have any pause or any situation where COVID stopped us from doing it.”

- Owen Kovacs 8 of 11 for 205 yards, 3 TD
- Teddy Berkery 5 of 7 for 82 yards, 1 TD
The final game score was within two cumulative points of the OG’s prediction of 35-8. Only the OG’s prediction could sparkle like that.
The Rye Cheerleading team cheered the boys to their undefeated season. “We want to say thank you to senior Emma Jackson for her 4 years of dedication to Rye Cheer,” said Rye Girls Varsity Cheerleading Coach Melissa Marsden. “We will miss you dearly but Catawba College is lucky to have you. We will also miss junior Mille Bolann as she is moving back home to Norway. Losing 2 major members of our team will hurt for now but we are looking to our next competition season.”
