Rye Boys Varsity Rugby dominated New Rochelle in its season opener this past Friday, winning 40-0.

“Tomasso Grani opened the scoring for Rye early in the first half,” said Rye Boys Varsity Rugby Coach Jim O’Hara. “This capped several phases of unselfish play from the Garnets, as they passed the ball all the way outside to the charging senior fullback. Grani took the pass and blew past his opposite defender to score the first try of the season for the Garnets.”

The Rye Rugby team came out of the gates fast and hard against New Rochelle. Up 26-0 at halftime, the Garnets kept their foot on the gas and continued their tough defensive play by shutting out their opponents and winning 40.

Tries were scored by Tomasso Grani, Gio Cavatoni, Dan Dalton, Ryan Becton, Yves Briginshaw, and Bernie Costello. Man of the Match Dan Dalton successfully kicked 5 out of 6 conversions for the Garnets.

This is an encouraging start for the Rye Rugby Team, who moved up this year to Division 1 in Rugby NY. The team has three nationally ranked opponents on the schedule including NY State Champions Xavier High School of NYC and Massachusetts State Champs Belmont High School.

The Garnets face Rockaway this Friday, April 8th at 6:30pm at Nugent Stadium.
