Rye Boys Varsity Soccer found itself in the pink versus Eastchester on Thursday, winning 4-3 at home.

“Our first half was fantastic, and I was thrilled with the way we were on the front foot from the start,” said Rye Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Jared Small. We moved the ball with purpose, and we generated a slew of opportunities because of our energy and creativity. Our second half didn’t reflect our best work, but I think we were willed to tonight’s win by the power and generosity of our pre-game guest speakers, Sara Miller and Monica van der Voort. On a night dedicated to raising awareness for cancer research and giving thanks to Soul Ryeders, our speakers encouraged the boys to recognize the strength of our community and appreciate the significance of the pink kits we were wearing.

Stijn Terlouw opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a left footed strike to the near post. Eastchester responded with a goal in the 17th minute before the Rye attack exploded for three more first half goals. The first came after Kieran Traynor tracked a ball down near the corner and laid a nice pass back to Jonas van Beurden, who served a fantastic ball into the box. Tommy Broderick’s glancing header put the Garnets up 2-1, and only three minutes later another Broderick header–this time off a service from Julian Koide–doubled the lead. Shortly before halftime, Broderick intercepted a pass in the final third, slipped around the goalkeeper, and fed Terlouw for an emphatic finish.

The 4-1 halftime lead proved precarious as the visitor scored in the 56th and 75th minutes to set up a wild finish. Kyan Cox finished the night with 6 saves–several of them in big moments–to help the Garnets prevail 4-3 and stay atop the league tables with a 4-0 record.

The Garnet season is now 10-3. Watch the replay. Varsity plays at John Jay Cross River on Monday at 11am (watch it).
