The Bake Sale that Fuels Sunday’s 69th! Annual Halloween Window Painting on Purchase Street
One of the best Rye traditions – the (69th!) annual Halloween Window Painting on Purchase Street and across Rye – is this Sunday, October 23rd from 9:00am – 3:00pm. What you may not know is the window painting is funded in part by a bake sale. Now you have a great reason to walk downtown and buy lots of cookies this Sunday.
The bake sale that takes place during the window painting is run by Children’s Philanthropy, a non-profit (501c3) and part of the Women’s Club of Rye, that helps fund the window painting event, run by Rye Recreation. Members of Children’s Philanthropy who volunteer at the bake sale get the highly sought-after window assignments in town, as Rye Rec tries to keep children near the parents who are volunteering – a good tip when you are planning for the 70th annual event in 2023.
Other programs run by Children’s Philanthropy include Families in Need Meal Program (Stop-n-Shop gift cards are given to families whose children qualify for the Federal Free Lunch Program at Thanksgiving and Spring Break. In 2021 this assistance was provided to 47 families in Rye), Holiday Angels Gift Program (Target gift cards are given to these same families and presents for the younger children in the Rye elementary schools), and Rye High School Scholarships (two $1000 scholarships to two deserving Rye High School Seniors to help with their college expenses). The group also grants local organizations including Rye Recreation, Rye YMCA, Rye Nature Center, The Rye Arts Center, The Rye Library, and the Rye Youth Council.
Other Children’s Philanthropy fundraising events include Family Portraits in Rye Town Park, Holiday Shopping events, Wine Tasting nights, Tennis Round Robin, Couples Paddle Night, and One-Night Painting Classes.
