JOHN JAY WOLVES @ RYE GARNETS – FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4 @ 7:00PM
LAST WEEK’S GAME – RYE @ PELHAM PELICANS
One-loss Pelham entered the Section One Class A Quarterfinal contest with soaring expectations. Other than a single guano splatted by Clarkstown South, the PELHAM PELICANS had a clean and undefeated bill of health. To top it off the Blue & Gold consider the Garnets to be their rival – not neighbors Eastchester, Mount Vernon or New Rochelle, primarily due to school enrollment size disparities for athletic classification purposes. It’s kind of difficult to have a rivalry if one team (Pelham) never wins, witness the all-time 44-5-2 tally in Rye’s favor. The Rye defense clipped the Pelican wings, only allowing a single last-minute touchdown while the Garnet offense notched three scores of our own. No fish for the Pelicans as the game ends 20-6 securing a happy ride home on the Hutch for the Garnet faithful.
GARNETS HOST THE WOLVES AS JOHN JAY SLINKS INTO NUGENT FOR A SECTION ONE CLASS A SEMIFINAL CONTEST
In this week’s Class A Semifinal do the Class A, League B #3 seeded Garnets find themselves debating a colonial era statesman or are they thwarting attacks from a pack of rabid canine predators, the Class A, League A #4 seeded JOHN JAY/CROSS RIVER (Katonah) WOLVES? This week it’s win and advance to the Class A finals at Mahopac HS, or lose and turn in your equipment to prepare for the start of the winter sports offerings.
Although past assemblies have been rare, there is some history between the Purple and White and the Garnet and Black what with the Jay family homesteading both in Rye and Katonah. John Jay was the first Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court and one of the seven “Founding Fathers” of the USA. He hung his wig in Katonah while both father Peter and son Peter called the Jay Mansion on Rye’s Boston Post Road home. The historical record is tight with the northern Jays being one of the few families holding a legislative advantage with five wins to four losses over Rye.
Of course a Founding Father would demand a politically correct mascot for the school bearing his name, so about five years ago there was a student vote to change the mascot identity away from the “Indians”. The JJHS Electoral College declared “Wolves” the winner on a majority of the student ballots, while others favoring “Cupcakes” professed the election had been stolen from them. Hence all prior games were against the Indians while Friday’s contest is the inaugural against the snarling, slobbering Wolves.
The Wolves scampered for over 600 total yards and 58 points last week, so expect the Nugent Stadium scoreboard to pop a few more light bulbs. Along the distant shores of Blind Brook O/G sees the Wolves, tails between their legs, wandering aimlessly brookside and retreating in a northerly direction with the final tally Garnets 33 – Wolves 21. It’s on to the Section One Class A Final at Mahopac for Rye’s Garnets while the Wolves start basketball practice.
In next week’s Section One Class A Final could there be a rematch for Rye with the Wolves canine cousins, the Harrison Huskies ? ? ? ?
Wow. That was good!
