In Memory: Carl Everett Nelson, Age 85

Obituary - Carl Everett NelsonCarl Everett Nelson of Fairfield, Connecticut, passed away on March 1, 2023. He was 85. Carl was affectionately known as “Rocky” to his friends and as “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren.

Carl was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on June 23, 1937. He was a graduate of Eastchester High School, Class of 1955, and Dartmouth College, Class of 1959. He was a member of Alpha Delta fraternity and was always eager to tell a story from his Animal House years. The week after his college graduation, Carl married his wife, Joan. After a brief stint in Norwalk, they settled in Rye, New York, where they raised their three daughters. Carl and Joan eventually relocated to Fairfield, where they have lived since 1985. They were married for over 64 years.

Carl had a long career in the commercial printing industry. He worked in all facets, beginning in the mailroom and rising through the ranks to work in manufacturing, marketing, and sales. He was pleased that his career culminated with his participation in a buyout of a printing division of a major corporation. He retired in 2000 and had many years to spend time with his family, pursue his hobbies, and serve in various roles on the board and committees of Woodfield Village Condominiums. He developed a special bond with his grandson, Brian, because he helped to provide childcare during his early years.

Carl was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. He was a season ticket holder with the New York Giants for many decades, and he loved to bring family and friends to tailgate and cheer on his beloved team. He also loved to root for the New York Yankees and was always glued to the television during March Madness.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Mabel. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Joan, and his children: Laurie Nelson (husband, Robert Thibault); Christine Ritter (husband, Todd); and Tracey Tiedman (husband, Paul). He was exceptionally proud of his five grandchildren and their growing families: Christina Thibault; Lindsey Frolkov (husband, Denys); Leah Anderson (husband, Joseph); Mitchell Tiedman; and Brian Ritter.

A memorial service will be held at Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home on Friday, April 14 at 4 p.m., followed by a reception at the Woodfield Village clubhouse. Donations may be made in his honor on his Memorial Wall with the American Lung Association.
