In Memory: John Thomas Morgan, Age 93
John Thomas Morgan, born August 17, 1929 in New York City, died in Stamford, Connecticut on April 20, 2023.
He was raised by his mother, Marie Morgan, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota inspired both intellectual curiosity and a boundless desire to explore the world. He enjoyed a varied career, including a decade as a United States Foreign Service Officer, which included postings in Lima, Peru as well as Hamburg and Frankfurt, in what was then West Germany. The experience of promoting peace, prosperity and U.S. interest abroad left him with an abiding interest in public affairs, both international and domestic.
Following his Foreign Service career, Mr. Morgan went on to be Minnesota’s State Economist and then the First Deputy Superintendent of the New York State Banking Department. After a stint as CEO of American Savings Bank in New York, he returned to public service. One of his great interests in retirement was working with the International Executive Service Corps on behalf of the U.S. Agency for International Development, on assignments in a variety of developing nations. Following a lifelong interest in the sciences, he also served as Executive Director of the New York Academy of Sciences.
He earned an M.B.A. at night from the University of Chicago in the 1950’s, and in 1963 earned a Masters of Public Administration from the Harvard School of Government.
He was a long-time resident of Rye, New York, a member of the Rye Presbyterian Church, the Apawamis Club and the Coveleigh Club, all of Rye, as well as the Harvard Club of New York City.
Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Schmalz Morgan. He is survived by their three children: James, Susan and Kathryn, as well as six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
