The Osborn senior living community in Rye held an intergenerational Flag Day celebration on Wednesday, June 14th. Osborn Elementary School students and Osborn residents were brought together to patriotically celebrate the flag raising. Rain prevented the ceremony from occurring outdoors on The Osborn’s south lawn, so the event was held in the Osborn auditorium.

Just prior to the event, Osborn residents Robert November, John Savage, and David Ross shared one-on-one stories with Osborn school children. This gathering was organized by the Rye City School District and The Osborn Community’s intergenerational program. Their efforts help bring together and engage younger and older generations in Rye.

Matthew Anderson, President and CEO of The Osborn, initiated the main ceremony’s welcome remarks. “The flag is a reminder that in America, you are free to choose who you are and who you want to be,” says Matthew Anderson. “The flag inspires unity in America like no other symbol.”

Anderson was followed by guest speakers Dr. Eric Byrne, Superintendent of Schools for the Rye City School District, and Robert November, President of the Resident’s Association. A sing-along with children from the Osborn school in the Osborn Melody Makers culminated the celebration with several patriotic songs, including The Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful.
