Rye Boy Varsity Soccer MVP, Next Captains & Other Awards
MyRye.com is featuring varsity team MVPs from the fall 2023 sports season.
At the Rye Boys Varsity Soccer team banquet on Thursday, December 7, senior goalkeeper Max Crothall received team MVP honors based on player balloting that took place last month.
Max returned to Rye in June 2023 after two years training in Europe and put together a brilliant season, leading Rye to the Section 1 championship match for just the second time since 1983.
“He is a strong shot stopper with fantastic positioning and reflexes, and his communication and distribution are of the highest quality,” said Rye Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Jared Small. “He made a season high 7 saves, all of which were of the highlight reel variety, in Rye’s 1-0 win over Class AA state-ranked #5 Eastchester. In the quarterfinals of the Section 1 playoffs, Max put together an iconic performance when he saved the first two shots by Lakeland and led Rye to a 3-1 penalty kick win over one of the section’s top teams.”
“In the bigger picture, his commitment to training and his maturity have helped his fellow goalkeepers–juniors Aydan Breen and Martin Fields–bring their own training regimes to a higher level. In just one season, Max made an immense impact on the team and was voted as Team MVP by his teammates.
Additional player selected awards were presented at the banquet:
-Most Improved: Chase Pepper
-Miller Family Heart Award: Tommy Broderick, Tilman Oberbannscheidt
-Rookie of the Year: Shun Nagata
-Byrnes Family Scholarship: Tyler Triolo
-Coaches’ Award: Alex Lee (selected by coaches)
The team also announced Jack Gilroy and Kaden Zion as captains for 2024.
