Rye Varsity Football Quarterback AJ Miller is headed to play for Syracuse University as a preferred walk-on. Miller announced the decision on X (fka Twitter) on Tuesday.

AJ Miller Rye High School Syracuse University Tweet 2024-01-30“I am so thankful and blessed to announce my commitment to further my academic and athletic career at Syracuse University,” said Miller “I would like to thank God, my parents, my teammates, my coaches and my family for their constant support and love during this process. I would like to thank Coach Fran for this unreal opportunity. It’s been a long time coming. Orange nation, let’s get to work.”

A preferred walk-on offer means the coach would like you on the team but can’t offer any financial assistance at least for the first year. With Miller as quarterback, the Rye Boys Varsity Football team won the NYSPHSAA Class B championship versus Maine-Endwell 28 – 7 on December 3rd at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse. It was the fourth State title in Garnet football history and the first since 2008.

Miller was also awarded the 2022 Rye Youth Human Rights Award last January for his role as Co-Founder of the Bridges Club at Rye High School.
